  • Middle School Math
    • Math Curriculum

Students will be placed in the appropriate course for their mathematics skills and level.  We use the Prentice Hall Mathematics Courses 1, 2, and 3 series as well as Prentice Hall Algebra 1.   Students will be assessed with homework, projects, quizzes and tests.

      COURSES 1, 2, 3

Students in Courses 1, 2, 3 will study topics from the 10 strands described in the NCTM Principles and Standards.  The 10 strands are as follows: number and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis and probability, problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connections and representation.

      COURSE 1 FOCAL POINTS

Number and Operations:  Developing an understanding of and fluency with multiplication and division of fractions and decimals.

Number and Operations:  Connecting ratio and rate to multiplication and division.

Algebra: Writing, interpreting, and using mathematical expressions and equations.

      COURSE 2 FOCAL POINTS

Number and Operations and Algebra and Geometry:  Developing an understanding of and applying proportionality, including similarity.

Measurement and Geometry and Algebra:  Developing an understanding of and using formulas to determine surface areas and volumes of three-dimensional shapes.

Number and Operations and Algebra: Developing an understanding of operations on all rational numbers and solving linear equations.

      COURSE 3 FOCAL POINTS

Algebra: Analyzing and representing linear functions and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations.

Geometry and Measurement:  Analyzing two- and three- dimensional space and figures by using distance and angles.

Data Analysis and Number and Operations and Algebra:  Analyzing and summarizing data sets.

      ALGEBRA 1

Algebra 1 is a high school level algebra course.  The intent is that a student would be able to be place or test into a second year leveled course (ex: Geometry 1 or Algebra 2) upon successful completion of the class.

Students will study foundations for algebra, solving equations and inequalities, functions, linear functions, systems of equations and inequalities, exponents and exponential functions, polynomials and factoring, quadratic functions and equations, radical expressions and equations, rational expressions and equations, and data analysis and probability.
