The mission of Holy Spirit School is to serve God by providing a challenging academic education within the Catholic Tradition.
Reading – Students will learn and apply several strategies to increase comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary building. Literature Circles will be introduced to the class by reading several novels together in small groups and whole groups. Through this students will participate in many exciting small and whole group activities. A Teacher’s Read with the class is also done to model good oral reading.
Language Arts – Students will learn to construct complete sentences, identify parts of a sentence, and write persuasive paragraphs using the writing process. Students will also learn how to use proper punctuation when they write.
Math – Students will work on place-value and writing numbers in expanded, word, and standard forms. Students will learn to use the 4-step Problem-Solving Process on word problems. Basic multiplication and division math facts are stressed a lot throughout the year. Students will also learn measurement, fractions, and decimals during their fourth grade year.
Social Studies – Students will study our great state of Wisconsin in 4th grade socials studies. We will travel back in time learning all about the Ice Age along with the earliest groups that came to our state. We will then move onto learning about European exploration and how our waterways played a great role in history during these times. We end the year by learning and memorizing all of our 50 states!
Science – We will focus on the Earth’s Land. We will explore the importance of soil conservation and learn how natural forces like moving water, wind, and ice shape the land. We will also focus on energy, living organisms and their impact on our world, and the basic systems of our body, such as skeletal, respiratory, and nervous systems.
Religion - Students main focus in 4th grade will be learning all of the Ten Commandments. Throughout the year we will focus on each commandment individually. We will learn how they relate to our own lives and how we can strive to improve our actions to become greater discples of Jesus through these commandments. We will also take part in learning about our Catholic faith-based holidays, such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and other important feast days throughout the year. We will also take part in weekly mass and our students will have the opportunity to lead several mass during 4th grade.
